n June 1st, at the upcoming World Extreme Cagefighting event in Sacramento, California, two of the United States more accomplished and respected featherweights will face off. Of course, the card’s main event competitors in WEC 145lb. champion Urijah Faber and challenger Jens Pulver fit this description, but so do scheduled undercard rivals, Jeff Curran and Mike Brown.

Adrenaline MMA Press Release! Russow eyes biggest test in debut of Adrenaline MMA
(onthemat.com)
So, it is understandable when Russow only smiles and refers to fighting veteran Jeff Monson in a professional mixed martial arts bout as a "great opportunity." Russow, 9-1 in his pro career, takes on Monson, 23-7, in the heavyweight main event of Adrenaline MMA on June 14 at the Sears Centre. A total of 13 pro bouts are scheduled in the inaugural Adrenaline event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and fights begin at 6 p.m. "Monson is far more than just a veteran," said Adrenaline CEO Monte Cox. "He has fought in every major event in the world and competed for countless titles, including the UFC heavyweight title. He comes into the event having won 18 of his last 20 bouts and is looking to prove Russow is not yet ready for the big time. "Russow, on the other hand, has been crushing opposition and has been tested twice in major events... losing to then No. 6 ranked Sergei Kharitonov in Pride, then crushing Roman Zentzov in Japan's Yarennoka event last New Years Eve. He's ready to show he should be considered among the world's best." Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Sears Centre Box Office, online at www.searscentre.com or by calling 1-888-SEARSTIX. A foursome of UFC veterans make up the two feature bouts. Chicago's Terry Martin (16-4) will face Japan's Daiju Takase (7-11) while Chicago's Brian Gassaway (25-17) takes on Las Vegas' Tony Fryklund (14-9).

DREAM fight in Jeopardy for Nick Diaz
(graciefighter.com)
Nick Diaz's DREAM bout is very much in jeopardy. Diaz was given the go ahead by EliteXC for a April 29th fight against Marcelo Garcia in Dream, however when that fight was scrapped, Dream decided to instead have Diaz fight on their May 11th show. Unfortunately no one at Dream shared this information with EliteXC and EliteXC President, Gary Shaw, only learned of the change via the internet 2 days ago. With Diaz having been scheduled to fight in Hawaii on June 14th, Shaw finds the new May 11th date perilously close to the Showtime card and has therefore nixed Diaz's participation on the Dream card. Unless Shaw has a change of heart this fight will be a no go.

The BJJ world champion, that now is training at Xtreme Couture, at Las Vegas , is attracting attention from his teammates with his strong trains with Forrest Griffin. “I definitely think that he can do well in that category. Apart from been very strong for this weight and also for Heavyweight guys, he has heavy hands”, said Forrest Griffin to TATAME magazine #145, that bring exclusives shots from Xtreme Couture trains.

Jake O'Brien finds a new home
(nokaut.com)
California-based, Palace Fighting Championship (PFC) has announced the signing of recently released UFC heavyweight Jake O'Brien. O'Brien was undefeated with a 10-0 record until his loss to Andrei Arlovski at UFC 82. He was subsequently released by the UFC a month ago. What does PFC president Christian Printup have to say about his most recent signing? "We are very excited to bring in one of the most promising young heavyweights in the country," swooned El Presidente "He's proven himself at the sports highest level... Jake is a great wrestler with solid boxing skills. A lot of people haven't seen that, but we want to put him in some fights where he can show it." Why the UFC cut a 10-1 fighter from the weakest division they have is beyond me, but hey they got Lesnar vs. Coleman so that's... something.

Thomas Schulte: Time For The Next Step?
(mmafanatics.com)
At this past weekend’s Ultimate Warrior Challenge in Fairfax, Va., F.I.T. NHB product Thomas Schulte made yet another case for himself to get an opportunity to fight on the big stages of mixed martial arts. A veteran of such promotions as King of the Cage and Hardcore Championship Fighting, Schulte finished off Zack Light – an assistant coach for Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s team on this season of “The Ultimate Fighter” – in just over one minute, adding to a current three-fight winning streak that’s seen him not go past the 75 second mark in each outing.

TOKYO -- More than 3,900 fans gathered Saturday to celebrate the first card of Shooto's 20th anniversary series at the newly opened JCB Hall, just a stone's throw from the time-honored Korakuen Hall in Japan's Tokyo Dome City complex. While the evening proved to be a rough one for some of Japan's best, it was still an exciting night of fights. Capping off the card was a welterweight showdown between two of Shooto's top 154-pounders in Takashi Nakakura (Pictures) and Ganjo Tentsuku (Pictures), who were vying for the title Tatsuya Kawajiri (Pictures) had recently vacated.

Mousasi Wants Manhoef in Dream GP
(sherdog.com)
Despite a 20-2-1 record, Gegard Mousasi (Pictures) was a heavy underdog going into Tuesday's fight with Denis Kang (Pictures) in the Dream middleweight grand prix. After his first-round submission win over the Canadian veteran, one can definitely say the role was not justified.

Breaking News: Aoki Out, ‘JZ' Back in Tourney
(sherdog.com)
Just a day following Gesias "JZ" Calvancante (Pictures)'s exit from Dream's lightweight tournament, the American Top Team slugger is expected to find his way back in the field, a source from Calvancante's camp informed Sherdog.com Wednesday morning. Shinya Aoki (Pictures), 15-2 with 1 NC, suffered a facial injury in Tuesday's bout that saw him outpoint Calvancante after two rounds. The injury will prevent the 24-year-old Japanese grappler from competing in the May 11 tournament semifinal. According to the source, Calvancante, fresh off his first mixed martial arts loss in nearly four years, was contacted by Dream staff early Wednesday and informed of Aoki's withdrawal.

More money than meets the eye in the UFC
(sports.yahoo.com)
One of my passions in life is technology. I’m obsessed with gizmos and gadgets and am all but in love with my iPhone. A friend who knows about my obsession had a computer he wanted to sell on eBay and asked me what I felt it was worth. He went to a Web site that showed an estimated street value, one I felt was considerably too high. He argued that his asking price was justified because this web site was made up of experts and they agreed with him. True, I said, but something is only worth what someone else will pay for it. And when we went to eBay and looked at completed listings for a computer with specs similar to his, he was shocked. People were only paying about half of what he thought he could get. And that same analogy is true when it comes to fighter compensation. There is a lot of debate in the mixed martial arts media over what the UFC pays its fighters. It’s easy to take the stance that the fighters deserve more pay.
