After Pacquiao vs. Mosley, UFC president White and boxing's duBoef discuss future
(mmajunkie.com)
LAS VEGAS – Contrary to a popular opinion in the MMA community, boxing most certainly is not dead. The 16,412 fans that packed Las Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena – nearly 1,600 more enthusiasts than the UFC has ever drawn to the venue – for Saturday's Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley event proved that at boxing's highest level, the sport still is financially viable. Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't glaring opportunities for the sport to improve and evolve. Nevertheless, UFC president Dana White, who was among the sellout crowd on Saturday night, believes boxing can survive. His organization is not in a competition with boxing, White said, and both fight sports can flourish. "I think boxing and the UFC can coexist," White told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) after the pay-per-view show. "I'm a big fight fan. When there's a good boxing match, I want to see it."

Diaz focuses on Cyborg -- then boxing?
(sports.espn.go.com)
Nothing is taking Nick Diaz's mind off the task at hand -- not the hoopla surrounding his refusal to move up in weight and face Jason "Mayhem" Miller nor the possibility of competing in a boxing match later this year. Strikeforce's welterweight champion is focused solely on successfully defending his title on Saturday night (on Showtime at 10 ET) in San Jose, Calif., against Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. If Diaz loses focus for just a short period of time, his reign could end. Diaz (23-7-0, 1 no-contest) is aware that Santos has enough power and determination to end his night quickly.

Rikuhei Fujii Claims King of Pancrase Crown
(mmafighting.com)
TOKYO -- Pancrase's penultimate event of the year at Differ Ariake on Sunday featured three title fights in which all participants had met in the ring before. Light heavyweight King of Pancrase Ryo Kawamura made a small step towards redeeming himself from his embarrassing knockout loss to Yuji Sakuragi in September as he managed to fight to a tense majority draw in the rematch for the belt. Yuki Kondo was looking for redemption as he dropped a unanimous decision to Wajutsu Keishukai RJW's Rikuhei Fujii in Cage Force back in September, but it was spoiled as Fujii again outworked the 85-fight veteran on the feet and on the canvas to claim Kondo's crown.

Soccer Brawl Outside Brazil Fight 3 Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured
(sherdog.com)
BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- The Brazilian MMA community has long argued that its sport is safer than soccer, given the history of Brazilian futebol rivalries and violence. Saturday night in Belo Horizonte, that violence tragically bled indirectly into MMA. While the city's Chevrolet Hall played host to the third edition of Brazil Fight, an alleged brawl between supporters of rival Belo Horizonte-based soccer clubs Atletico Mineiro and Cruzeiro broke outside the venue, leaving one man dead and two others hospitalized. 19-year-old Otavio Fernandes died Saturday night due to sustained head trauma after he was allegedly beaten with an iron bar by members of Atletico Mineiro fan group Galoucura. Flavio Celso da Silva, 35, and Rodrigo Marques, 39, were also sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to eyewitness accounts of the full-scale street fight that erupted, the much larger Galoucura group overwhelmed the Cruzeiro fans, attacking them with iron bars. The fight is estimated to have only lasted a few minutes, but blood was still visible on the ground outside Chevrolet Hall on Sunday morning.

Carwin Sponsor Banned from UFC 121
(sherdog.com)
Add another sponsor to the list of brands that UFC fighters may no longer display during events. Sports drink company Good4U Drinks today announced via its Web site that Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta informed the brand in an email that they would no longer be welcome at UFC events. Good4U's American representative, Rick DeBanks, wrote this morning: “Good4U Drinks is seen by Zuffa as a direct competitor to Xenergy (which is owned by Zuffa) and AMP Energy, which advertises heavily on both WEC events and Spike TV's “The Ultimate Fighter.” Although Good4U are sport drinks and not energy drinks, they have been taking share from these brands.”

Did TMZ Mislead Everyone with the Roger Huerta Streetfight Video and Story?
(cagepotato.com)
MMA journalists are accused all the time of being "TMZ-like" reporters -- sensationalistic rumor-mongers who report on stories devoid of any real facts. Calling a reporter that is just as bad as saying "you have no integrity and have no right to be in your chosen profession." edit: i know this was a hot topic yesterday..so hopefully this quite the storm down a bit...

Askren Lose at World Team trials.
(bleacherreport.com)
Travis Paulson, a name that may be common place in the MMA community in a couple years, became even more well-known in the wrestling world this evening. Paulson went on a tear this weekend at the 2010 United States wrestling world team trials by upending 2008 Olympian and Bellator finalist Ben Askren in the challenge tournament semi-finals, then beating his twin brother in the finals to set up a best of three series with U.S. National champion Andrew Howe. Paulson avenged his U.S. Nationals loss to Howe with back-to-back wins, cementing his place on the United States world team at 74kg.

The long-expected non-title fight between Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (19-2 MMA, 3-0 BFC) and UFC veteran/recent signee Josh Neer (27-9-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) now has a date. Jeff Monson to Struggle For Relevance Against Dave Herman
(cagepotato.com)
MMA's hardest working anarchist is showing no signs of slowing down in 2010. Coming off a split decision victory in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 16, Jeff Monson's next challenge will likely come at Shine Fights 3, where he'll face pathetic mustache owner Dave "Pee Wee" Herman, according to The Rumble. Despite a year full of legal troubles ranging from a graffiti-related arrest to assault on a grandfather clock, Monson still managed to fight five times in 2009 in a globetrotting effort that took him to Northern Ireland, Japan, and Mexico City, among other exotic locales, like Pensacola, Florida.

Alvan is set to display his ground skill when he faces UFC middleweight Jorge Rivera in a special grappling match coming up at the New England Grappling Championships in Rhode Island.
