411's MMA Roundtable 1.14.08: 2007 - A Year to Remember
Fans would be hard-pressed to find a twelve-month stanza in Mixed Martial Arts history filled with as many memorable moments as 2007. Dubbed by many as "The Year of the Upset", the MMA world would bear witness to multiple "Fight of the Year" candidates, phenomonal individual performances, underdogs overcoming the odds, and countless other memorable moments inside arenas from coast-to-coast. The past year also brought forth the creation of 411Mania's MMA Zone. What started out as a handful of Mixed Martial Arts enthusiasts bombarding the board with original content and news bits soon morphed into one of 411Mania's most popular areas. Now featuring fresh submissions on a daily basis from a pool of talented MMA writers, an increasing score of exclusive interviews, and a constantly-updated news section, it stands to reason 2008 should be an even more-successful year.

Tito Ortiz: I Run A Multibillion Dollar Company
That quote from Tito Ortiz during last night's "Celebrity Apprentice" in reference to his Punishment Athletics clothing line. It might be an effort by Tito to stay on the show, rumors are he could be "fired" on next week's show.

New Year’s Mixed Martial Arts Resolutions (Story from Yahoo! Sports)
As the year ends with a bang in mixed martial arts, it’s time to start thinking to 2008. To help things along, I have a few resolutions to share for the big names in the business. Dana White: There is no fight fans want to see more than one between Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko. For the good of the sport, the UFC president should put everything else aside and do what he has to do to make this fight happen. Randy Couture: Should make a concession and defend his UFC heavyweight title if White agrees to allow him to fight Emelianenko. Fedor Emelianenko: The man who once was universally regarded as the world’s top MMA fighter continues to fight questionable opposition. Emelianenko owes it to the sport and his fans to take on quality fighters. If it’s not Couture, then he must insist on it being Josh Barnett. “Big” John McCarthy: The famous ex-referee should promise candor in his new role as an analyst for The Fight Network. He’s collected many great stories during his years as an official and he should promise to share them with his viewers. Great article with some great insights. Props to Kevin Iole.

Finding Fedor
To really understand a man and the choices that he makes, you have to know where he comes from. Beyond his public image, beyond your own projecting, you have to understand his place in the world. You have to understand how he has been influenced by the physical and psychological manifestations of his country's politics. Most importantly, you have to know his outlook on life. It's easier said than done. Real understanding is often all but impossible

Cro Cop Returns
What I’ve learned from my friendship with Mirko Cro Cop is that you can never be sure what he is up to. He prefers to keep his thoughts for himself; he’s always been a man of a few words. His absence in the media often results in completely misleading stories, coming from people who are giving their best shot in evaluating Mirko’s position and the nature of his future plans....

Spotlight On GSP's Supercamp
MMAWeekly recently was able to observe a Friday sparring session at Georges St. Pierre's training camp in Canada, which also featured Rashad Evans & Denis Kang, among other notable fighters. Also a brief item on "Big" John McCarthy being at the TKO 31 event in Canada for The Fight Network.

And yet another "Big" John McCarthy interview
This one is pretty extensive and touches on a lot of subjects so I thought I would post it too. Really good to hear that The Fight Network should be comming to combat sport fans in the States soon. I can't say enough about this channel. Chris Howie of MMANews.com: This is Chris Howie with MMANews.com and today I am speaking with former UFC head referee and the newest addition to the Fight Network team, "Big" John McCarthy. How are you today John? "Big" John McCarthy: I'm doing good. Just spending a few days here in Toronto. MMANews.com: How are you liking the city? "Big" John McCarthy: Well, they lied to me and said it never snowed here.

Big John Interview
After so many times of imploring mixed martial arts fighters, "Let's Get it On," John McCarthy sought trademark protection on the phrase. For more than a decade, "Big John," was the UFC's choice referee, a figure often referred to as the "Octagon's ninth side." After more than 500 bouts that trace the UFC's evolution, McCarthy retired -- sort of -- last week. Now he'll be getting it on for The Fight Network, North's America's only all-combat sports channel. He recently sat down with SI.com

Rickson Gracie - Exploring Genius
Numerous modern day Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu masters declare openly that Rickson Gracie’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the supreme expression of the art today. Indeed, many world-class Jiu-Jitsu players, champions in their own right, declare solemnly that Rickson Gracie is a virtuoso. The intent of this essay is to speak about my personal experience indicating Rickson’s uniqueness and to pursue several explanations that may shed greater light regarding the source of his matchless skills.

An Update On Ryan Gracie's Death
It has been confirmed by multiple reports that Ryan Gracie tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, and some kind of anti-anxiety medication. After Gracie's arrest, Psychiatrist Sabino Ferreira de Faria was contacted by Gracie's wife and immediatly went to the jail that was detaining Gracie to attend to him, which he did for the majority of the night. He was informed of Gracie's passing while he was on his way home. The doctor stated that he administered the following drugs to Gracie in his cell in order to calm him down: -Haldol (a powerful antipsychotic), -Fenergan (which has a side effect of sleepiness) -Topamax (for Migraines) -Dienpax (tranquilizer) -OmniPlex (relaxant). We're still awaiting the medical examiner's report to confirm the official cause of death but the police officer who discovered his death believes Gracie died of an apparent heart attack.

UFC.com Article On Retirement Of "Big" John McCarthy
It was the perfect going away gift for a referee • Saturday’s lightweight war between Roger Huerta and Clay Guida. But like all great ‘third men’, John McCarthy • who retired as an active referee following last weekend’s main event - was noticeable by being noly noticeable, making all the right moves and all the right calls, a fitting end to a 13 year journey that saw McCarthy become as much a part of the UFC as the great fighters who have graced its Octagon. Gonna miss you BJM

Randy Couture Guest Speaker for Packers
Fox Sports today rolled out a fantastic article about Randy Couture coming into the Packers locker room at the behest of one of his biggest fans….Brett Favre. That’s right folks, one of the best QB’s in the NFL today looks to the darling of mixed martial arts and current UFC heavyweight champion, Randy Couture for inspiration. Despite what has happened between the UFC and Couture in recent weeks, no one can deny the storied career of Randy, and how, at his age, he is still making strides for his career. ...
