Ed Herman wasn't happy with TUF coach Ken Shamrock
Ed had a recent interview with MMA 24/7 radio and discussed his time on TUF. In his interview, Ed expressed his displeasure with being on Ken Shamrock's team saying although he and his coaches were nice, they were not good coaches and his team was often stood up by Shamrock. Ed once again said he would love a rematch against Alan Belcher since he thought he won that fight. He also would like another chance at Demian Maia and any other top 10 fighter in his class. Ed also answered several fan submitted questions on the show. Ed's interview starts at the 32 minute mark in the podcast.

UFC officials and fighters cautiously enthused by Brazil's soccer sponsorships
While Brazil may indeed be the spiritual birthplace of mixed martial arts, the combat sport is hardly the national pastime. That honor belongs to soccer, a sport in which Brazil has won more world championships (five) than any other nation. But while Brazilians specialize in playing a version of soccer known as "the beautiful game," off-pitch clashes between fans can sometimes turn violent. So with many of the nation's soccer clubs now supporting UFC athletes, is the promotion asking for trouble?

Tyron Woodley 'frustrated' that Strikeforce won't commit to giving him a title shot
Pretty? No. Effective? Yes. That might be the best way to describe Tyron Woodley's win over top 170-pound prospect Jordan Mein at the Strikeforce: "Rockhold vs. Jardine" event that took place last Saturday night (Jan. 7, 2012) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. He got the job done. The undefeated wrestling phenom did exactly what he's done in his last three fights, also decision wins, and that's control the pace with effective grappling and position. While he failed to secure a stoppage, it shouldn't take away from the fights he has finished, including five submissions and one technical knockout across his short but impressive career. At least, that's "T-Wood's" argument (via Sherdog's Savage Dog Show), one he's making after Strikeforce executives failed to guarantee him a 170-pound title shot.

Jacon Volkmann: I never said Obama needed a glassectomy
Jacob Volkmann was widely quoted as saying to Joe Rogan immediately post fight at UFC 141 "Obama needs a glassectomy. Ask me what a glassectomy is, Joe." This was the second time he had made unfortunate remarks about the President. The first time he said "someone needs to knock some sense into that idiot." That earned him a visit from the Secret Service temporary placement on administrative leave by the High School where he works part time as a wrestling coach. This time the Secret Service had better things to do, but Volkmann was again suspended. This time Volkmann says he is innocent.

Gonzaga: I want to be a world champion
“I believe in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, I accomplished everything I wanted,” Gonzaga, 32, explained to Bleacher Report. “I won state, national, and world-championship titles. In MMA, I had the opportunity to fight 12 times so far for the UFC. I fought for the UFC heavyweight title, and against some of the best fighters in the sport.” Gonzaga’s retirement from mixed martial arts would ultimately prove to be short-lived. “I believe I was looking for some time to reset my goals,” offered Gonzaga. “I enjoyed the chance to stay close to my students, and also the extra time I was able to spend with my family...My students and my friends were asking to see me fight again.”

UFC 145 in Montreal adds Anthony Njokuani vs. John Makdessi
UFC 145 has added a lightweight bout between two dynamic strikers. UFC officials today announced that Anthony Njokuani (14-6 MMA, 1-2 UFC) and John Makdessi (9-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) have verbally agreed to meet at the March event, which takes place in Montreal. UFC 145, which is the first Canadian show of the year, takes place March 24 at Montreal's Bell Centre. The night's main card airs on pay-per-view, and the preliminary card airs on FX. Njokuani vs. Makdessi likely will be part of the prelims. Njokuani looks to rebound from a close UFC 141 split-decision loss to late replacement and wrestler Danny Castillo. Njokuani, a former WEC fighter who hasn't put together back-to-back wins since late 2009, is 2-4 since then, though he often puts on crowd-pleasing fights. Against Makdessi, he should be able to keep it standing...

Ex-champ Alvarez not joining season-six Bellator tourney, targeted for Aoki fight
Former champion Eddie Alvarez won't be fighting for a chance to reclaim his Bellator lightweight title anytime soon. Bellator chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney today told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) that Alvarez won't take the final slot in the organization's season-six lightweight tournament. Instead, he's working to book Alvarez for a rematch with DREAM champion Shinya Aoki. Alvarez, a season-one tourney winner who held the title for two-and-a-half years, lost the belt to Michael Chandler in November at Bellator 58. The spirited and back-and-forth bout, which proved one of 2011's best, ended in a fourth-round submission victory for new champ and still-undefeated Alvarez.

Gabriel Gonzaga Talks Taking Time Off, His UFC Return and More
"I believe the time away from the Octagon was really good, as it allowed me to take care of some smaller projects in my life. It also allowed me to regain my focus on my career as a mixed martial artist. I’m very happy to be back fighting for the UFC. I’m hungry to get back in there and fight. I want to prove that I can make a big run in the heavyweight division. It’s time to focus on winning my fights and getting back to where I was before I left."

UFC 142's Ricardo Funch happy to replace fellow lawman, eyes octagon redemption
RIO DE JANEIRO – When Brazilian special-forces officer Paulo Thiago was forced to withdraw from this weekend's UFC 142 event, it only made sense that welterweight replacement Ricardo Funch (8-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) stepped in to face Mike Pyle (21-8-1 MMA, 4-3 UFC). Sure, Funch isn't quite as well-known as Thiago, but as a recently commissioned police officer in his current residence of Ludlow, Mass., he's capable of carrying the shield. "I was in the right place at the right time," Funch recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) in his native Portuguese. "I had just won a fight, and Paulo Thiago got injured. Since I'm Brazilian and I have a passport and the UFC needed a quick replacement, it was this combination of factors that allowed me to come back." You may remember Funch from his two previous UFC contests, a pair of losses to Claude Patrick and Johny Hendricks. If you don't, that's just fine, according to the 31-year-old. Funch now admits he probably wasn't ready for the UFC experience at the time he got the call.
