Nate Diaz wants a UFC comeback fight, but there's just one problem: 'Nobody’s interesting'
...Diaz also talked about fighting, which he’s still interested in doing, contrary to UFC President Dana White’s continued assertions that he isn’t during the last year. “I’ve been trying to get in there and get going,” Diaz told MMAjunkie. “I’ve been wanting to get in there and get going this year. I just got this lawsuit out of the way that I’ve been going through for the last two years, so I wasn’t even able to fight. So that’s all done and over, and I’m ready to get back to fighting if I’m going to be fighting anymore. … “I’m training until there’s something good to do here.” Something good apparently doesn’t include former two-division champion Georges St-Pierre.

Raquel Pennington’s loss at UFC 224 shines spotlight on the onus of cornering
Back at UFC 188, 10 minutes into giving it his best shot against the younger, stronger Kelvin Gastelum, Nate Marquardt told his longtime cornerman Trevor Wittman he was done. With no trace of inner-conflict or reluctance, Wittman turned to the referee, Dan Miragliotta, and conveyed that sentiment — “it’s over,” he said. “Stop it.” And they did. The fight was stopped. Wittman didn’t linger for a moment on what it means to be a “warrior”, and felt no need to reiterate a timely fight game dogma to “dig deeper”; he was Marquardt’s guardian and protector in the heat of the moment, and he acted as such. Sometimes accepting “enough is enough” is its own act of courage, especially in a sport where the most taboo word imaginable is “quit.” On Saturday night, after 20 minutes of giving it her best shot against the stronger, more versatile Amanda Nunes, Raquel Pennington told her corner she’d had enough. “I’m done,” she said, “I want to be done.” In this case, her corner didn’t let her go so gentle into that good night. “No no no no,” her coach said. “Let’s power through this. Let’s believe. Change your mindset. Change your mindset. Let’s just throw everything we got. We’ll recover later. Throw everything we got.”

Yair Rodriguez cut by UFC for turning down Lamas and Magomedsharipov bouts
From being considered a rising star that could carry the Mexican market for the UFC, to being unceremoniously released from the roster, all in a year? That seems to be the case for Yair Rodriguez, according a report from LA Times’ Lance Pugmire. The number 11 ranked featherweight was said to have been punished for declining two bouts for UFC 227 against Zabit Magomedsharipov and Ricardo Lamas, and has been subsequently cut from the promotion. Pugmire says the news comes from Dana White himself.

Dana White: Georges St-Pierre vs. Nate Diaz in works for UFC 227
UFC 227 is on the cusp of becoming a summer blockbuster, and Dana White is hoping for his “perfect world” scenario for the August event in Los Angeles. The UFC president today revealed a lightweight fight between former UFC middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (26-2 MMA, 20-2 UFC) and Nate Diaz (19-11 MMA, 14-9 UFC) is in the works for UFC 227. The matchup was reported by MMA journalist Mike Russell over the weekend, but TSN reports no bout agreements have been signed. That’s the fight White wants next for St-Pierre and Diaz, though, he said on the “UFC Unfiltered” podcast. And the news didn’t stop there. White also revealed UFC 227 could land a light heavyweight bout between Alexander Gustafsson (18-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) and former 185-pound champ Luke Rockhold (16-4 MMA, 6-3 UFC), though no interim belt would be on the line as rumored.

Julia Avila shows off gnarly broken finger she sustained at Invicta FC 29
Julia Avila had her night cut short at Invicta FC 29 on Friday when she suffered a gruesome compound fracture of her left ring finger in the first round. Avila’s opponent, Marciea Allen threw a kick and it landed awkwardly against her left hand, breaking her finger in gnarly fashion. Allen was ruled the winner by TKO due to injury just 49 seconds into the bout. It was the first loss of Avila’s career. Afterward, Avila was in mostly good spirits, showing off the bone poking out from the skin to the cameras. She seemed to get a bit more emotional when she was brought to the hospital. In an video posted to Instagram, Avila showed the badly broken finger again and nearly broke down explaining what happened. The California native said she would have preferred them just cut the finger off so she could continue her fight with Allen.
