Bonnar Faces Former Training Partner At UFC 77
In the two plus years since Stephan Bonnar cannonballed into the Ultimate Fighting Championship pool, the affable Indianan has endured more turmoil than many of his peers will experience in their entire careers. From the death of his longtime mentor, Carlson Gracie, in February 2006 to his well-publicized positive test for an anabolic steroid six months later, Bonnar has exhausted much of the momentum he gathered in his historic bout with Forrest Griffin on the season one finale of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Ever so quietly regaining his foothold in the mixed martial arts world, Bonnar (10-4, 4-3 UFC) walks back into the pay-per-view limelight against former training partner Eric Schafer at UFC 77 “Hostile Territory” on Saturday at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. Bonnar remains cordial with Schafer and admits the familiarity that exists between them adds an awkward dimension to their fight ........................

The California State Athletic Commission today released the official fight card for No Limit Fighting’s “Brawl For It All” this Saturday at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Couture and Fedor offered 3 million to fight
DAVIE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Cage Fighting Championships (CFC) Spokesperson Crawford Grimsley announced today, “The CFC will put up a $3,000,000 purse to bring the Couture vs Emelianenko fight to Pay-Per-View. $1,000,000 will be guaranteed to each fighter while the winner takes home an additional cool million, making this the largest single purse for any one MMA fight.” Grimsley, a former heavyweight boxer who went 12 rounds with big George Foreman for the world title in 1996 said, “I don’t know who set up the current MMA system of sanctioning bodies locking fighters into exclusive long term contracts. I do know who is out to change this system though, we are, the CFC. We are not going to try to reinvent the wheel, but we would like to add a little of the business model that professional boxing has adopted for decades. Can you imagine if professional boxing would not allow champion to fight champion. How many great boxing matches would we have missed?”

Help Rampage Jackson Legalize MMA in Tennessee
Be sure to do your patriotic duty and help the man from Memphis, Tennessee legalize our beloved sport in his home state. There are lots of good gyms in Tennessee and a ton of promising fighters looking for an outlet. In fact, considering Rampage himself came from the great state of Tennessee, we really don't know how much talent is being stymied or ignored by the lack of available legal options to pursue mixed martial arts.

“The Meat Cleaver” turns Body Snatcher for Burkman Bout
Forrest Petz couldn’t resist going there, at least not with a New Yorker on the other end of the line. But if the welterweight prospect sounded more than a little giddy that his hometown Cleveland Indians had just eliminated the Yankees from the MLB playoffs, it may just be because when the local teams do well, his own success seems to follow.

Sylvia’s Quest for a Third Belt Begins Saturday
Tim Sylvia’s been here before, in the role no fighter wants to be in. And while “comeback” is a dirty word because it means you’re returning from a loss, serious injury, some other mishap, or a combination of all of the above, those who do return in successful fashion find glory first of all, and sometimes they even find redemption.

Burkman bringing American-Whu-Hit-U to Cincy this Weekend
In mixed martial arts, as in many sports, success is measured by adherence to the “little things” that may not show up on a highlight reel or stat sheet, but which most definitely can affect the final score or the outcome of a match. Josh Burkman found that out the hard way against Karo Parisyan at UFC 71, when a strong first round was nullified by the poise of the veteran Armenian, who went on to win a three round unanimous decision.

Words of Wisdom with Brandon Vera
"Don’t let it bother you; you’ve got to deal with what’s in front of you.” If Brandon Vera’s UFC career up to and including the night of November 18, 2006 was a Hollywood script, it would have been tossed into the scrap pile because it was too perfect.

Karo's Not Worried
Karo Parisyan was prepared to face fellow judoka Hector Lombard until it came to light that visa issues would keep the Cuban fighter out of the country. He will now instead face former Pride fighter Ryo Chonan in a welterweight match-up at Ultimate Fighting Championship 78 in Newark, N.J.

News on Jake Shields, Tim Sylvia, Sean Salmon, Cung Le and Bill Mahood
After claiming his past four or five fights have been “easy” victories, Elite Xtreme Combat welterweight Jake Shields (19-4-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) says he’s ready for a step up in competition, which could mean a move to the UFC. In a recent interview with adcombat.com, the 28-year-old fighter confirmed he has one fight remaining on his current contract and wants to talk to the UFC before he considers re-signing with EliteXC. Shields, who many consider a top-10 welterweight, would be a solid addition to the UFC’s 170-pound division — but the division is stacked, and it wouldn’t be an easy road to a title shot.

UFC endures tough week
While UFC remains the No. 1 domestic MMA brand in the U.S., last week's announcement by Randy Couture that he is resigning from the promotion wasn't the only bad news for Dana White. A couple of other domestic and foreign competitors made moves that only compounded the shock of Couture's departure.

Work In Progress: Cuban Critiques His MMA Debut Show
The first HDNet Fights MMA show is now in the books, and now HDNet owner Mark Cuban is commenting on how everything came off, basically amounting it to a work in progress and a "learning experience". One good sign is that it appears everyone, both fans and fighters, left happy. That's one very important thing for Cuban to stay focused on in the future so that both keep coming back.

News From Japan: Akiyama-Kang Headlines HERO'S
At a press conference earlier today in Tokyo, FEG announced the full card for the K-1 HERO'S event on 10/28 in Seoul, South Korea. The biggest story was that the main event will be Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Denis Kang. A bit of a surprise here, while they were both expected to be in showcase bouts I don't think anyone expected them to be in the same main event fight.

Karo Parisyan: No Lombard, No Problem
UFC Welterweight Karo Parisyan, who was set to face Hector Lombard at UFC 78 before visa issues caused Lombard to pull out, doesn't seem to mind Ryo Chonan stepping in to replace Lombard. In fact, Karo might be looking more forward to it now. Definitely a bigger fight now based on just name recognition and also because Chonan is another top PRIDE fighter coming over to UFC.
