Shogun Rua On His Knee, Forrest Griffin, Couture, And His Future
Below are excerpts from an interview conducted with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua by punchdrunkgamer.com: Shogun on his knee: The knee is great, the surgery was a success and the doctor told me that everything is running better than the original schedule. I'm already doing physiotherapy and I think that I will be fight training in December. I will be back fighting in February or March, I hope so. Shogun on a rematch with Forrest Griffin and a possible fight with Tito Ortiz: I don’t like to choose my opponents, I want the UFC belt and I'm sure that Forrest will be in my way to accomplish this. So a rematch is just a matter of time. As I told you, I don't choose my opponents but I can fight Ortiz, no problem. Now that I have a recent defeat I will need to prove that I can have the UFC belt and Ortiz is probably living with the same situation. There is good chance for this fight to happen. Shogun on Couture, Fedor and M-1: I like the idea to have more Events like the UFC and PRIDE. It is good for the sport, the fighters and for the fans. Someone told me about the money offers for both (Fedor and Randy), if the numbers are true I'm sure that it is great news for all of the fighters, the sport is going for a new level. M-1 for now is a good promise, UFC is a reality and I think that Fedor is trying to get the best for his career. Randy is the UFC image and maybe there is something that they will fix and we will see him in the UFC again.

Travis Lutter: "I can beat Anderson Silva."
Travis Lutter recently sat down with fighthype.com for an interview. Below is an interesting excerpt: Lutter On Anderson Silva: I really think I can beat Anderson Silva. I made a mistake during the fight and as far as the weight cut. I don't want to take anything away from Anderson's win. I made a mistake in the fight and got caught and I don't think I would make it again. I'd like to fight him again. I think I could take him down and impose my game the way I was. I'd really like to get another shot at Anderson. I think stylistically, I match up a lot better than most of the middleweights in the world with him.

California State Athletic Commission: The epitome of the paradox
An article that hits almost every point you can regarding the CSAC. It gives information on their members, their decisions, and a historical sequence of decisions that lead to indecisive judgements on fighters, administrative problems, and overall zero knowledge about the appeals. Outlines Sean Sherk, Phil Baroni, James Toney, and others as far as wacky circumstances that have occurred at the CSAC. Overall, great article on the inside of the appeals and the CSAC in general.

Baroni Not Happy With Reduced Sentance
LOS ANGELES – Phil Baroni looked morose as he exited his hearing with the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday. His suspension of one year had been reduced to six months, but his name was not cleared. “It feels like a loss to me,” Baroni told reporters. “I’m convicted of using steroids. I didn’t use steroids. I thought I took enough tests to prove I didn’t. I wanted more than anything to prove I didn’t do it. To be cleared of it. And I’m not. I’m labeled guilty. “I’ll be able to fight soon, but I still didn’t get what I wanted.” Baroni testified in front of the CSAC board for nearly a half-hour, flatly denying any steroid use and speaking at length about his career and training methods. The centerpiece of his defense was four separate steroid tests he took around the time of his fight. The first was taken at the behest of manager Ken Pavia, who claimed he ordered it prior to the fight after discovering one of the 67 supplements Baroni was taking carried a warning for causing false positives. Baroni said he didn’t want the test floating around for possible detection by the media, so he had his fiancé’s name used in the results.

Liddell Ready To Welcome Silva Back To UFC
No one was more excited by the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s official announcement that Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva would finally fight at UFC 79 on Dec. 29 in Las Vegas than Liddell himself. "I'm very excited," the former light heavyweight champion told MMAWeekly.com. “I've been waiting for this fight for a long, long time.” The bout has been years in the making and many believed it would never happen, including Liddell, "I thought that for a long time. I've always said I'll be surprised when it does (happen), but I'm happily surprised now and I can't wait until we get there." Now that the bout agreements have been signed and the fight is official, Dec. 29 cannot come soon enough for Liddell.

Phil Baroni's Suspension Reduced To 6 Months
The California State Athletic Commission on July 3, 2007, stated that fighter Phil Baroni had tested positive for Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite following his Strikeforce main event bout with Frank Shamrock on June 22. He was subsequently fined $2,500 and suspended for one year. Boldenone and Stanozolol are common anabolic steroids that are banned from athletic competition in California. Baroni went before the commission on Tuesday to appeal and subsequently had his suspension reduced to six months. With the penalty being retroactive to the night of the bout, he will be eligible to fight again after Dec. 22. His fine was upheld. “I take this as a loss. I never did steroids,” said Baroni following the hearing.

Sean Sherk CSAC Ruling Postponed
UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk (Pictures) will wait two more weeks to hear his fate after the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday decided to recess the 155-pound Octagon ace's hearing until November 13. Sherk, 34, was set to go before the CSAC Wednesday morning to dispute tests which showed elevated testosterone levels and the anabolic steroid nandrolone in his A and B samples following his decision victory over Hermes Franca (Pictures) at UFC 73 on July 7. The CSAC stated that polygraph evidence and testimony filed by Sherk's Attorney Howard Jacobs was not disseminated to the entire commission for review. The lightweight expressed frustration to Sherdog.com at this morning's hearing, stating that he has invested $20,000 in the ongoing process. A ruling on Phil Baroni (Pictures), who tested positive for boldenone and stanozolol metabolites following his submission defeat to Frank Shamrock (Pictures) on June 22 in San Jose, is expected this afternoon.

EliteXC to implement new weight classes
EliteXC President Gary Shaw announced today that the promotion will implement new weight classes to improve the safety of its competitors. “I am very concerned in the mixed martial arts world of this drastic cutting of weight,” said Shaw. “Fighters can fit better in these weight classes and fight for world titles without endangering their health.” EliteXC will remove the 155-pound weight class and add 140, 150 and 160 divisions. The company's weight classes are now: 140, 150, 160, 170, 185, 205, 265 and 265+.

Update on the Sherk appeal
The Sherk steroid odyssey continues … another hearing has been set a month from now. No ruling until Nov 13th at the earliest … that’ll be the next date. Issue was Jacobs submitted a packet on Friday which no one looked at. Since they didn’t look at it, he asked for another postponement. The package contained polygraph information and other shit which doesn’t matter. Sherk said he’s spent 20k in legal fees and is pretty pissed off about all this and “isn’t happy about the recess”. Well hey … neither are we. Phil Baroni is up next, but I’m not sticking around to blog the result.

Kevin Iole Retard Watch
I want to apologize to the average MMA fans who come here for general MMA news. We’ve been spending a lot of time talking backroom politics and business, and I promise that the moment something actually involving fighting happens, we’ll be the first to talk about it. Oh what? Werdum vs Gonzaga in January? Okay, I’ll try to find something funny to say on that which isn’t racist towards Brazilians.

Is The UFC Re-Writing Contracts?
According to the Steve Cofield’s show on Fox Sports Radio 1460 in Las Vegas, the UFC is believed to be re-writing the contracts of several established stars in order to tighten up the legal language in them to eliminate any potential loopholes. With the potential of a court battle over Randy Couture's contract looming, it makes sense that the UFC would seek to shore up any deficiencies contained in the language of the contracts they write. This could also be construed as a sign that the UFC recognizes the possibility that Couture's contract may contain a loophole that could allow him to fight again in nine months. A point Couture and his lawyers seem very adamant about.
