According to multiple sources, there is a proposed deal on the table for the UFC to release former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson from his contract in order to allow him to sign with ONE. In return, ONE will release former welterweight champion Ben Askren from his contract so he can finally join the UFC.

Losing the best flyweight is a bad deal no matter whats on the table.

I'm good with it tbh. It's bold, it gets people talking, and it makes sense in a lot of ways.

1) DJ's old in flyweight years, but he isn't shopworn. He can hop out to One FC with his health, enjoy life in a different country, get paid a ludicrous amount of money, then retire on a fat stack. Plus, he could, in theory, get the bragging rights of belts in two top organizations.

2) Askren's not exactly old in welterweight years, especially since he hasn't been injury prone and he hasn't taken a lot of damage. His game has never been about twitch athleticism, either - it's in the strength and skill of an ace grappler who gradually learned how to maul opponents. Oh, and he's got a granite chin. He can finally show whether his trash talk about UFC welterweights was smoke or fire.

3) In all likelihood, Cejudo's got a few prime years left. Instead of a drawn out trilogy that could take years and hold up the division, this opens up a potential run of champion dominance for him. Alternatively, we could get yet another champion as we learn that Cejudo still has holes in his game - or that he simply was blessed with the night of perfection that some fighters get once in their lifetime, and that night becomes legend.

4) Each organization gets an ace level fighter that's new to the audience. Folks here know who they are, but we're enthusiasts. The average mma bro, not so much.

It's risky. Good strategy is.

Me thinks this signals the end of Men's 125.

No way. They’d get rid of the women’s 145 way before the men’s 125, that is if they were to do that.
