How did controversial judge Adalaide Byrd do in her return at UFC 222? Could've been worse

Fighters beware: Adalaide Byrd is back in as a judge in Nevada, and no one is safe from her questionable calls.

This was a point made, in no uncertain terms, during Saturday’s UFC 222 broadcast from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. UFC commentators made sure to mention that Byrd was back from a “breather” that the Nevada State Athletic Commission essentially forced upon her after her controversial scorecard in the Genaddy Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez boxing match this past September, and neither Joe Rogan nor fellow cageside commentator Daniel Cormier seemed to think that was a good thing.

“She’s a very nice person,” Rogan said after fellow UFC commentator Jon Anik pointed out that Byrd was back as a judge for the first time since that Golovkin-Alvarez bout. “So is my mom, (but) I wouldn’t want her calling any fights.”

I wanted to post this because Byrd is a real problem.

I'll sum up the 3 fights that she judged that went to Decision. Might I note that ALL 3 fights she scored were Split Decisions.

Stamann vs Caraway - Byrd's score 29-28. Of the 3 she judged this was the only fight that she agreed on the score with 1 of her peers.

Dodson vs Munhoz - Byrd's score 30-27 Dodson. The other 2 judges were Split, both 29-28, one in favor of Dodson the other in favor of Munhoz. But she was all by herself giving all 3 Rounds to Dodson.

Dern vs Yoder - Byrd's score 29-28 Yoder. This was probably her biggest mess up of the night imo since this fight was a pretty clear cut 29-28 win for Dern. Luckily the other 2 judges got it correct and Dern was successful in her debut. Also 19 media outlets scored this fought for Dern and only 1 scoring it for Yoder.

I think Byrd overestimates counter punching way too much. Looking at her score cards, she obviously favors people walking back, keeping distance, and being the second one to throw. This can even go back to her judging Canelo and Triple G, and which she gave Canelo a 118 score based mainly on his counter heavy gameplan.
And that isn't inherently a bad thing. I personally feel many judges don't give enough credit to counter punchers and focus more on people charging forward and throwing heat, even if they are constantly getting hit.

She honestly seems like the polar opposite to Cecil Peoples, who was a notorious bad judge who would give anybody the fight if they came throwing massive heat and went forward constantly, even if they were getting their asses kicked. I.e Leonard Garcia vs Nam Phan 1.

But like Cecil, she is incredibly biased and turns a blind eye when the fighting style she likes is losing. I have no idea how you can give Dodson the 2nd round vs Munhoz or Yoder the 1st vs Dern unless you think going having good footwork is better than landing more shot that actually do damage.
So, she is still an awful judge and I hope she gets her judging license revoked soon.

I was saying it in the fight camp during the fight how shit she is. Her call on the Yoder fight was plain wrong and Munhoz definitely won at least the 2nd round against Dodson.

Does she understand anything about grappling ? She seems to favour striking heavily over any grappling exchanges.

In the movie Casino (a classic, BTW) a scene comes to mind where Robert DeNiro confronts the useless floor manager about not catching a customer rigging the slot machines to win the jackpot 3 times in 20 minutes. DeNiro told the manager while he was firing him, that he basically was "Either completly incompetant, or you're in on the fix. Either way, you're fired!"

This sums up my feelings on Adalaide Byrd. She's either Corrupt or Incompetant. Either way, She's gotta Go. Now.
