For the better part of six years, Donald Cerrone was a world-class lightweight. He was a perennial contender in the WEC, and he remained one of the best in the world at the weight class up until he challenged for the UFC title in 2015. Cerrone came up short in that fight and afterwards, with limited prospects for another title shot anytime soon, he made the move up a weight division where he immediately was very successful, rattling off four wins and finding himself on the cusp of a title eliminator bout.

Recently though, things have taken a bad turn for Cerrone who has lost his last three fights in a row, and with his career once again at crossroads, it appears “Cowboy” intends to ride back down a familiar path: the UFC lightweight division.

He really did just lose to the size of Till, so I can understand this move. I would say just be more selective about opponents would help though. He's never going to be a champion so just fight fun fights against guys who aren't in their early 20s killing themselves to make 170, or Jorge Masvidal cause that dude is scary.

It's probably a good call to move back down, but really he never had trouble with the size of 170 guys. I'd like to see Cerrone vs Iaquinta, see if he can handle a 155 guy with hands, if he can beat someone like Iaquinta then he's right back in the mix. Something tells me though that the durability of Cerrone is starting to diminish and he has never fought well against decent boxers.

Extremely smart decision for his fight career as far as longevity goes.....he can't be fighting guys who are 20 lbs heavier than him and expect that his power is going to match theirs. The Till fight is what made the decision so easy for him I bet......can't wait to see him back at his natural weight class.

Same, could be different now though, who knows......both guys have gone in weird directions throughout their UFC careers. Just glad to see Cerrone back at his more natural weight class where I'm sure he will smash guys again.

Edit - Also, with a 3 fight losing streak I think they give Cowboy someone beatable in his next fight before they start throwing top 15 top 10 guys at him.

Maybe someone like Nik Lentz who's coming off a win could be Donald's huckleberry.

Good move by cerrone.

I think he gets a 10 to 15 opponent.

Cerrone vs Marcin Held? Cerrone vs Will Brooks? Cerrone vs Damir Hadžovic? There's definitely plenty of fights Cerrone can take that doesn't have to be against a killer in the top 15. Cerrone always fights the best, let him have a gimme to get back in the groove of things.
