New weight classes coming to MMA

With extreme weight cutting becoming more and more of a issue in our sport new rules and plans have just been passed to help combat this issue.

The addition of more weight classes in MMA is coming as soon as summer time.

New divisions include...

165Lbs

175Lbs

195Lbs

225lbs

Personally i feel rather then adding new weights and diluting the other established weights,i think just replacing some with more weight allowance would be nice.

My ideal mens weight classes

135Lbs Bantamweight

145Lbs Featherweight

155lb changed to 160lb Lightweight

170lbs changed to 175lbs Middleweight

180 lbs changed to 195lbs Light Heavyweight

205 lbs changed to 220lbs Cruiserweight

265 lbd changed to 280lbs Heavyweight

I've always been in support of a 220 cruiser division its not fair hws have to deal with gigantic weight differences just because they are big.

So I guess we can expect this will also make it easier for fighters to hold title belts in multiple weight classes...thus making it take even longer for contenders to challenge for the belts.

Other than cruiser weight, I don't like it. I think that no matter what most fighters will cut as much as possible; so whatever the number is, is irrelevant.

Macho....read the article.

As well as new weights a new 10pt system will be put in place for weight cutting.Bigger fines, multiple checkins with doctors.

They are going to make it very hard to cut dangerous amounts of weight and instead are offering more options in divisions.

...and yeah, I also think the Cruiser Weight class was absolutely necessary. More LHWs will move up, knowing they're not gonna be facing a 250-pounder.

I would have 125, 135, 140, 145, 150, 155, 160, 165, 170, 175, 180, 185, 195, 205, 215, 225+

I have been calling for more weight classes for years.

One of the reasons I would have more weight classes especially in the 155 to 170 range is due to the ridiculous amount of fighters in those weight classes. Between 1/3 and 1/2 of all male UFC fighters are in the 155 and 170 divisions.

In the men's divisions the UFC currently has 44 heavyweights, 40 light heavyweights, 52 middleweights, 89 welterweights, 90 lightweights, 55 featherweights, 45 bantamweights and 31 flyweights.

The UFC should have roughly 25-30 fighters per division. That's how I'd love to see it anyhow.

so 165, 170 and 175? Just seems kinda silly to me. The IV ban is the real issue, I don't understand why they wouldn't want their fighters to be 100% healthy on fight day and if an IV can do that, then so be it.

IIRC, the main reason for the IV ban was that fighters were using it to mask PED use.

Don't like it at all. The worst part about boxing is all the weight classes and champions. It's gonna make it harder to follow for the normal casual

Boxing has the added problem of 3 belts per weight class for all the different organizations.

At least people don't have to worry about who the Bellator or WSOF champ is at Super Bantamweight.

Men's weight classes should be:
125 Fly
135 Bantam
145 Feather
155 Light
165 ??
175 Welter
185 Middle
195 ??
205 Light Heavy
225 Cruiser
250 Heavy
Max Super Heavy

Women's weight classes should be:
105 Atom
115 Straw
125 Fly
135 Bantam
145 Feather
155 Light

That's 18 weight divisions...that would be great for the fighters and horrible for the fans to keep track of and would create a lot of problems with multi belt champions. Champions are already being ignored, downplayed, or under promoted...just imagine the cluster fuck of 18 divisions...thuis sport doesn't have the fanbase, nor the talent, nor the upcoming talent to support what "should be". If it's not broke, don't fix it. Fix the judging, the rules, and the doping first.

I like the idea of 30 and 10 day check-ins, and gravity tests. Day of weigh-ins are a bad idea, it just means that guys will stay dehydrated longer. I could see the new weight classes being beneficial for the sport with those things in place. It must suck for guys who are naturally in-between the current weight classes.

I know their reasoning for it, I still disagree with it. 2 things I never wanted this sport to turn into.......Boxing and WWE style entertainment and it's headed in both directions.

Get on the Bellator train while you can.
