Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) does not have a women's featherweight division and has no immediate plans to create one.

That said, not everyone in the mixed martial arts (MMA) community is prepared to just roll over and accept things at face value, and now a petition has been created to let those voices be heard.

"We, the many fans of MMA, call on the UFC to open a Featherweight (145 pound) division for the women fighters," the petition read (read it here). "There is an audience for it and you have a world-class fighter in Cris Cyborg to be its inaugural champion."

I can understand why the UFC doesn't want a woman's FW division. Once you cross over that threshold of 135lbs the woman who are competing look a lot more like men, at least in their physique. It's hard to find a woman who looks femininely sexy at 145, and remember they cut up to 30lbs, so really we're talking about woman who don't look pumped up at 170, and there just aren't any. Some of the woman at BW already look pretty scary, and honestly, just like men's Super Heavy Weight, there's no reason for a woman to weigh over 135lbs (155 before the cut), unless they're over 5'10".

Are there 20 world class 145s out there to make this viable? I know there's one.

This. One of the biggest reasons for not having more women's weight classes and Men's Super HW are likely a lack of depth. At least at the moment, there are just not enough women who fight for a living and if you are a super HW man who is a world class athlete, you likely have other, more lucrative professional career options.

Of course there aren't a lot of athletes for the division the top promotion doesn't have. But if they make it, they'll come. It'll take time to become deep though.

I'd like to see it. I'm unconcerned with them being "femininely sexy"- leave that to the people whose job it is to walk around the ring in their underwear holding up signs.

Good point. I was going to bring up the men's Super HW division. Just because there are one or two fighters worthy of fighting in the UFC at a certain weight, does not mean you make a division just for them. This is no fault of Cris Cybog, but it is time to stop with the women's feather weight division talk, at least for now.

No thanks. There are about 20 different things regarding the UFC's actions lately where I would sign a petition but this is definitely not one of them. There is no talent at 145 beyond Cyborg. That weight class is filled with women who are really out of shape with playground-like skill sets. It's harsh but it's true. Cyborg also isn't going to attract the same level of attention a person like Ronda did. It's already been proven that casual fans don't respond to actual talent, they respond to loud mouths and tight asses. Cybrog definitely doesn't fall into either of those categories so It's never going to happen if it hasn't already.

I think it could work...I bet a lot of 135 pounders would cut less to fight in a new division. As far as how they look, for every Cyborg there is a Gina. I feel bad for Cyborg, I do...but I can't do more than guess/think about division depth. I use fight matrix a lot to see/analyze rankings because I like their system to a large degree. Even they can't list 15 fighters of note in the Women's Featherweight Division.

Now with 2X Olympic Judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison joining mma, there's another person to look out for at 145.

Easier said than done...try it yourself...just for a month. It's not easy, to lose weight while maintaining maximum performance capabilities. I can't do it and I work out 4+ times a week...just an average dude. I get it that she's a pro athlete and all, but at this point I think it's proven to be fruitless. She isn't making 135, just deal with it. Want her to fight Ronda? Talk/pay Ronda into doing a fight at either 140 or 145...you know Cyborg will agree to it. She's a real gangster ass chick, but she isn't making 135 lbs. If the UFC ever wants a women's FW div though, then the time is now...having a badass and dominant champion forces a division to grow or die, and right now they have that in Cyborg. Invest in the division now and in 3-5 years you'll have another cash machine like the women's BW div.

Besides, anyone who watches Invicta will tell you that 145 is the only div hurting for talent, the other 4 divisions (105, 115, 125, 135) are super fun to watch and the events are stacked to the gills with finishes. If the UFC invests properly they will some day include all 5 female weight divisions.
