Alex Oliveira missed weight by 5.5 pounds for his lightweight bout with Will Brooks at UFC Fight Night 96 in Portland, and he can’t gain more than 20 pounds before the fight.

Brooks accepted to face Oliveira despite the weight difference and will take 20 percent of his fight purse, and the commission won’t allow the Brazilian to gain more than 20 pounds until fight night. According to the trainer, "Cowboy" usually gains 29 pounds after making weight for a lightweight bout.

"The commission imposed a limit for him, and that’s a problem," Duarte said. "‘Cowboy’ is like Wolverine, he gains weight easily, so I will have to control what he’s going to eat so he doesn’t gain weight. Everything he eats is like concrete, he gains a lot of weight, so he can’t eat that much."

I think it's a vague reference to Wolverine (the marvel character) and his adamantium skeleton that makes him weigh much more than you'd expect for a man his size (300 lbs).

Maybe it's a reference to his amazing healing abilities?

Uspetting to see Oliveira do this, but it's a step in the right direction for AC's and the (re)hydration issue plaguing combat sports. Sucks even more for Brooks in my mind because this could put an asterisk on his win in the eyes of some. Let's not forget how much Uncle Dana hates people missing weight. A solid KO loss could send Alex out of the UFC. Brooks went through the cut and did it successful and his opponent doesn't make weight, and doesn't make weight by a significant amount. I believe this is also a call for more weight classes so there's no such a jump between 155, 170, 185.
