What a time to be a fight fan, I found myself thinking as Bisping stood there in the octagon, patting that gold belt like he couldn’t believe it was real. If only the night’s news had ended there.

But see, the thing that spoiled the evening for me was when I looked on Twitter and saw a missive from Ariel Helwani (via Twitter), the MMAFighting.com reporter who broke the news that Lesnar was in talks to return to the cage shortly before the UFC 200 promo confirmed it.

According to Helwani, not long after he reported that scoop UFC staff escorted him out of the building, relieved him of his media credential, and – again, according to Helwani’s characterization of events – told he was “banned for life”

No official reason has been given for the removal, but it is widely believed to be Helwani's reporting that Brock Lesnar was in likelihood signed to fight at UFC 200, which was published many hours before the official announcement. In time, the reason for the ejection should be confirmed or revealed, but at first glance, to borrow from The Greatest, grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand, Ali beat people up, and reporters report. There isn't anything objectionable in any of that.

It's troublesome. Disappointing. Hope the sale is realized sooner than later.

I just googled ufc 199. The first result was an LA Times article from 5 hours ago about Ariel getting the boot. Not the new champ, not lesnar or McGregor. The children who run the ufc crapped on their own big night by being petty jerks to the most well known and respected journalist in MMA. Ariel was on a bunch of big nationally sindicated radio sports shows this week, I imagine this will be a talking point going out of 199 more than bispiping. I'm seeingg other sites report this as a journalism new story who interest very little about mma.

I was perusing the interweb this morning and saw someone blog about this (and they're not much of an MMA fan, let alone a fan of the UFC) but they said something along the lines: Imagine if the NFL banned all reporters who broke news before the teams did, imagine if the NBA, NHL, you name it, banned reporters who broke news before the teams; well we would have no reporters.

Solid point. Fire him for doing his job. Thumbs up for you Dana & the Fritatta bros. Congrats on improving your public image on a regular basis.

Super shitty. Helwani can be annoying, but that's a quality in good reporters.

Didn't the UFC also get Helwani fired from Fox Sports several weeks ago too?

Where's the accountability on Zuffas side for not protecting the secret in the first place?

Unfortunately, it probably ends in the termination of the employee who leaked it. Shitty situation.

According to a source within Zuffa, releasing the story without first asking them for comment was a violation of their professional journalism policies.

Not only is that a pretty stupid rule, according to the version of their policies they have on their own website, there is no such rule in existence.

Its pretty obvious the UFC is sick of having their big news broken by someone who's just doing their job very well and they have lashed out pathetically by taking their ball away from him.

So fucking confused. releasing the story without first asking them for comment is considered against the rules?.....WAIT WHAT!?! Am i reading into this wrong? Ariel got info leaked by a ZUFFA employee, correct? Then why is he not allowed to leak it? He has to ask for a comment before leaking the info he got?

It's like my Uncle saying he killed someone and I call the cops. But technically the cops can't take my statement because I didn't consult my uncle before calling 9-1-1...am I right in this assessment?

IDK Why the UFC has such a hard on for Ariel Helwani all of a sudden? Sure he can come off as annoying but the dude is the best journalist in MMA. "Petty" you got that right!

Yup. For also leaking news. The UFC is getting heat for this already though. It's in articles all over North America. I was out with some friends last night and they brought it up out of the blue to see what I thought about it. I know for a fact none of them give two shits about MMA or follow it at all. This is a very bad look for them.

As mentioned, there is a story to take away from UFC 199. Unfortunatley it isn't a new champion winning as a big underdog, it isn't Cruz beating his rival or Hendo being Hendo or anything like that. Mainstream news has a story from UFC 199 and it is Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana Whites thin skin and pettyness.

Watched the DP show this morning before leaving for work. Ali was the opener for the first 15 minutes, the nedt story wasn't the NBA or NHL finals, wasn't Bisping or the French Open finals, it was Ariel Helwani being escorted out of UFC 199 for doing his job.

Ariel was on the show for an interview later. This was his account of the important stuff:

He first reported that his sources say UFC was very close to announcing the Diaz beats McGregor II fight for UFC 202 at 4:30pm from the press room.

20 minutes later a UFC PR person finds him to let him know he jumped the gun on reporting the story and it was inaccurate. Helwani vouches for his sources.

As we know, his report was accurate.

About 5:30pm Helwani reports the UFC is close to bringing back Brock Lesnar for UFC 200, then a little later reports his sources have informed him Brock is indeed coming back.

Fast forward to 9:30pm right beofre the main event is going to start. A UFC PR guy finds Helwani cage-side and says Dana White is demanding to speak to him back stage. Helwani says he cannot, the main event is minutes away from starting and he needs to see it, to report. The PR guy insists and says it's mandatory. Helwani asks if he can bring his colleague.

They go back and Dana is pissed, tells him to" pack his stuff and get out, he is banned for life, Lorenzo say he is banned for life, Lorenzo hates you, you are too negative, go be Bellators number one reporter, you are done with the UFC, take Ester and Casey with you."

UFC security watched them pack up their things escorted to the parking lot and watched anfd waited until they were off of the property.

In the 12 minute segment, the names Bisping, Cruz, Rockhold, Faber, Hendo etc were not mentioned. Brock, Diaz and McGregor were for the reasons said above, that Ariel reported on them.

You can find this story being covered on all of the biggest media outlets currently, generally not as much about MMA. The big take away story for national media after UFC 199 was Ariel Helwani being dicked over by some thin skinned assholes. Bad for MMA.

This is what I said on March 23rd when the UFC demanded FOX Sports cut ties with Helwani:

He'll be fine. He's worked himself into a good position in the sport industry. He's a go to at mma commentator for news, his podcast is one of the top in the genre. Sports talk shows call him up when big news or cards come around for commentary and he has working experience with an array of current and former espn and Fox sports producers and other decision makers.

Now if ufc blackballs him from events, there will be some news.

UFC blackballed him, and it is news.
