In the grand scheme of things, this is kind of a mess. Injuries happen, especially among the very best of the best, everybody knows this.

The thing is, if you have a title fight, you need to book top contests from that division around it as backup plans for injuries.

UFC 196 had that, HAD.

Ferguson is more of a contender for the LW title than Mcgregor, Diaz or Cerrone clearly. UFC rules dictate someone like Tony can't fight for the title for a while, but it was smart to put him on this card against Michael Johnson in case 'a while' came knocking in the form of a Mcgregor or RDA injury.

But Johnson got hurt and they pushed Tony into a fight 5 weeks later with Nurmagomedov. Perfect, deserving warranted replacement is 6 weeks from full big fight camp prime now.

What we are left with is the following:

The two top light weight, Tony and Khabib both saying they will take the fight still instead of fighting in mid April, big risk with devastating penalty for failure for both guys. UFC thus far either ignoring or refusing both respectively.

Diaz and Cerrone are the casual favorites, at least for casual reasons in that neither is anywhere near the title picture. They are the best match ups for coner imo, are two guys suited to fight next weekend at 170 more so than 155, two guys who will have to work really fucking detrimentally hard if a fight gets made at 155 and for what is being said by managers, for not even in the ballpark ($-wsie) of what it would take to get Diaz to make 155 in 11 days. And now it's reported the UFC will not allow a 165 catchweight with either because it's not fair to Mcgregor.

Two top 145s, one injured and the other fresh off injury suspension who his coach said has been training but nothing too serious, not like a fight camp, neither is prepared to take the 11 day notice fight given the stakes and that it would be against an opponenet conditioned for 155 coming in with a full camp. Smart choices. Neither Aldo or Frankie should be asked to fight for anything other than the 145 belt, a belt that pony-meat seems intent on never defending (an entirely different and more serious problem than this replacement fight btw).

They had the backup plan, they should of stuck with it. Keep Tony a fight with anyone else on this card, kieasa, Magdomedov, anybody. What's left is a mess. The booking of cards needs to be the insurance from when tp fighter do get injured. In the next 30 days beginning today, Parke vs Khabilov is the only higher level LW bout booked, not good enough planning at LW right now when they are lloking at guys too big, too small or injured to fill in, and ignoring the best guys volunteering. .

Haha, should have kept Ferguson on this card as back up, like I said earlier.

Ariel Helwani is tweeting that it seems to be Nate's getting the fight. Can't wait for the trash talk if he does end up getting it.

Ferguson and Nurmagomedov aren't getting over looked because they pose more of a threat to Conor.
They are being over looked because they won't sell as much as other options.

I think Tony and Khabib being a main event, Fox at that, prompts them to keep that fight together. That's a legit No.1 contender fight if I've ever seen one. Diaz fight is a win win, Nate coming off a strong when, and definite staple to the LW division gives Conor's title shot more legitimacy, not that it was necessary at this point, so I'm good with it

You can't possibly know that.

UFC and Conor only care about breaking viewership records $.
I'd think if Ferguson or Nurmagomedov had as much drawing power as Diaz or Cerrone, then the prior two would be the fights the UFC and Conor would be gunning for.
But you're right, I don't really know shit.

It'll be confirmed tonight and by the sounds of it Diaz will be the choice. bjpenn.com recently reported it's official but that doesn't hold enough water.

I'll be cancelling my trip, getting my ticket refunded once the new main event for 196 is made official. Outside the main and co-main, this card is SUPER weak and for $1400 (highest ticket price EVER) it's not worth attending. I'll only get credit for my flight but I'll likely put it towards attending UFC 197: Jones/Cormier 2 instead. It's a better card for a better price of $850....$600 cheaper.

Serves the UFC right for trying to sell a $1400 card on the fact that it's "Champion vs. Champion" with MCG having the chance in being a 2-div Champ. They put the entire card on his shoulders and it's not right. For that price tag, this card should have been stacked from top to bottom, one of the most stacked cards ever....but it is Conor McGregor, Holm/Tate and a card full of prelim and fight pass level fighters. There isn't even a good 3rd billing on this card. Outside the main and co-main, it stinks from top to bottom (it's not much better than a boxing card) and I hope TONS of people get refunds and make this one of the most poorly attended MCG Vegas cards to date.....then maybe the UFC will think next time when they put a $1400 price tag on a MCG fight.

Cerrone and Diaz will get dusted in the first round, don't care to see that and it's not worth $1400...UFC 196 is like a Fight Night card, especially now without the RDA/MCG "Champion vs. Champion" fight.

I don't know if I've ever seen a thread with this many posts that didn't involve a fight
