The UFC’s July visit to California has its first official fight, as Tony Ferguson (18-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC) meetsJosh Thomson (20-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC).

UFC officials today announced the contest, which takes place at UFC Fight Night 72 on July 15 at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center. The UFC announced the event earlier this month but did not reveal any matchups for the card.

Ferguson currently sits at No. 14 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA lightweight rankings, while Thomson is an honorable mention.

“El Cucuy” Ferguson, “The Ultimate Fighter 13? winner, is currently riding a five-fight winning streak and has lost just once in nine octagon appearances. Most recently, Ferguson earned an impressive first-round submission over longtime veteran Gleison Tibau at February’s UFC 184 event.

“The Punk” Thomson looks to snap a disappointing run of back-to-back split-decision losses to Bobby Green and Benson Henderson. He was expected to compete earlier this month at UFC Fight Night 62 against Gilbert Burns, but injury forced Thomson to withdraw from the matchup.

Don't know why the hell Thompson was on twitter with Ross Pearson if this was on the way hahaha unless he literally got a phone call right after.

Damn good fight though. Thompson needs a guy like Tony who's been on fire lately to get back into the mix and Tony FINALLY gets the top 10 he's been waiting for.

Should be a hell of a fight. No idea who to pick.

Excellent fight! Both dudes can bang. I'd give the wrestling advantage to Thompson with the BJJ advantage to Ferguson. Should be worth watching. Most of all, I hope Thompson remains healthy enough to show up and perform at his best. No crack on him, just empathy that the man's had to deal with stuff the last few years.

I think this can be more competitive then the Pearson fight, Tony deserves this fight, it should be good.

About time.....A set fight. Not a speculation. Should be a pretty good fight.

I hate to be the one who jinxes a fight but Thomson is honestly on a Nogueira level of getting hurt leading up to a fight and having to pull out. I'd like to think this fight will happen though.

Isn't it a bad fight for Tony though? 5 win streak vs someone who is on a 2 fight skid. And the guy with the 2 fight skid will probably be the betting favorite. How far up does Tony move up with this win? Not much and a lot to lose.
Love the fight from a fan's stand point though.

Tony will move up quite a few spaces if he wins decisively. Thomson is ranked number 9 according to the UFC, so if Ferguson beats him, he should break into the top 10 and will probably face a top 5 opponent afterwards.

That being said I'm pulling for Ferguson. Thomson is nearing 40 and he doesn't seem like he's got his head on straight while Ferguson just finished an extremely durable fighter in Tibau.

Depends on if you agree with bad judging. More people scored Thomson the winner of his last two fights then the loser. He's top 5ish for people in the know, while Tony is sniffing top ten. Tony earned the right to move up and fight someone like Thomson. If Tony wins he is in the title picture. Can't speak for people who don't know what they are talking about, but this is an important fight.

Sometimes I think they should just match 2 fighters you know will pull out regardless just for fun. Dominic Cruz v Chris Weidman, Rashad Evans v lil Nog rematch, Cain v another heavy weight.

This will be Tony Ferguson's greatest test yet (aside from Michael Johnson). A win can definitely launch him close to the Top 5. Thomson may need this win a little more, however, due to the fact of his two fight losing streak and consistent injuries (had a bout planned with Michael Johnson and Gilbert Burns on two separate occasions, had to pull out of both). Let's hope for a fantastic battle!

Thomson could have easily won his last 2, if not for judging. I like this fight. Lets see what happens
