During the recent UFC broadcast from New Zealand, Mike Goldberg botched Jonah Lomu's name and sport in a moment that Australian media have said fuels the American stereotype of ignorance toward other countries.

Whether or not this falls on Goldberg depends on the kind of prep he was given. Did he know they would have high profile celebrities from the country in attendance? Was he given names and bios, or was he regurgitating what he got through his earpiece on the fly?

It can be easy to mistake the pronunciation of someone's name when not having it written in front of you in a loud stadium. Not even getting the sport correct, that's just amateur production.

`Stereotype` implies it's unfair to assume this ignorance towards other countries on things like New Zealander name pronunciation and the difference between AFL (Australia Rules Football) and `Rugby union` players. lol.

This particular instance doesn't sound like a stereotype to me. Americans ARE ignorant of things like that over 99% of the time. Just as well, no reason to be otherwise.

Real broadcasters who deserve to be calling a sport at its highest level do their own homework.

I've always been critical of fellow Americans in regard to their ignorance of other cultures. That being said this is silly. He didn't mispronounce the name of the Prime Minister or make an overtly offensive comment. The truth is you could spend an eternity and never master the nuances and intricacies of all cultures. Do I really need to know the name of every sports star in your country? Aren't there more important things to master than the name of your favorite rugby player?

Maybe he should have got it right. But it's ridiculous that it's front page news that a sports announcer misread/pronounced a rugby players name. Get over it.

Oh and thanks for grouping us all together and stereotyping in your "we should be more sensitive and aware of other cultures" piece.

As a person from England & Wales. Yeah I was pretty pissed with the complete disrespect for him.

He's a massive deal in the world of Rugby and Rugby is depending who you talk to, the 9th-12th most popular sport in the world.

Now not only is he a big deal. He's in my eyes and the eyes of many, the greatest rugby player of all time, it was an honour that he showed upto the event.

And to associate the best rugby player of all time who came from New Zealand, with an Aussie Rules player is a big deal.

The same way as someone saying Le Brons a Canadian hockey player.

Baring in mind this was aired on fox the UFC should be embarrassed and yes. In my eyes it is a fitting image of American Ignorance.

I also found Kenny Florian sounding just like Rogan last night with all his favoritism towards one fighter, each fight.

I kind of expect people to pronounce indigenous names incorrectly, but to call Lomu an aussie rules player is almost an insult, if you knew the rivalry and amount of stolen celebrities between the two countries. Russel Crowe is an aussie btw.

To be fair Goldberg is completely ignorant of almost everything, including mma.

If you pay attention to what he says you'll quickly realize that Goldberg is half douchebag and half mentally disabled. I seen him call a rear naked choke a guillotine so many times that I'm convinced if you asked him what the letters in UFC stood for all you would get as an answer would be a vacant stare.

Huh. Who knew that other cultures had stereotypes about America?

Not me, that's for sure.

Also, who cares about other countries?

I don't care that Goldberg dont know nothing about rugby, even though I love it simply because the number of ufc events where they go to someone in the crowd who is a big basket ball player, baseball player or American football player and all im thinking is, "who the fuck is that"
