Undefeated UFC heavyweight contender Matt Mitrione (5-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will soon face the stiffest test of his young career when he meets Check Kongo (16-6-2 MMA, 9-4-1 UFC) at October's UFC 137 event in Las Vegas.
But Mitrione, a former professional football player and the man who booted Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson from the octagon, isn't intimidated in the least.
In fact, Mitrione said challenges like Kongo are exactly what drew him to the sport in the first place. A win here, Mitrione says, would provide him exactly what he's currently seeking: job security.
"I want them to not fire me," Mitrione said when asked about his current goals in the UFC's heavyweight division. "That's what I'm most concerned about. I want to have job security. After I beat Cheick, cool, let me get one more fight on the contract, and I'll be good."
It's a typical Mitrione response – one veiled in humor but based firmly in reality.

Was never all that high on him until his fight with Morcraft. Mittriones no world beater and will probably lose to Kongo but the dudes got a lot of heart and has actually developed his skill set quite nicely.

I think mitirione will remain undefeated after this fight. He's got great heart and some solid striking. I think he takes it to Kongo and finishes it in round 2.

Yeah, that's why I like him. He was trash on the show, but he's really put his heart into it and improved dramatically.

I agree. I think everyone hated him on the show. I mean, he is still a jag from time to time, but its all in good fun. Hes good for the sport. Hes likable now, and people see that his hard work is paying off.

Kongo is ******. He's getting put to sleep just like all of Mitrione's non-Joey Beltran opponents. I can't wait for this fight.
I, Like everyone it seems, didn't like him on the show, but have grown to like him since. His behavior on the show was probably just an act he or the producers wanted to put on. I think Meathead is one of the best personalities in MMA today. He gives a good interview, he's funny, he's confident and yet somewhat humble and self-depricating.
I think he has a good future in this sport.

Couldn't agree more p$. I actually don't even remember him on the show. That's probably a good thing though. He's improving dramatically with every fight. Kongo is going to be tough though. Matt's going to need to stop the takedown in this fight and make sure his hands are up.

If i were kongo i'd just be drilling Stand-up. I think his reach is vital against the slower Mitrione, and Matt's background might make him harder to take down than Kongo is used to.

Kongo is ******.
Kongo's striking skill is very good and rivals Mitrione's if not exceeds it. He's not the most well-rounded, but calling him **** is wildly inaccurate.

We all need to remember not to sleep on Kongo. Berry had him all but put to sleep and now he has a lose next to Kongo on his record. I'm not sleeping on either of these guys. I think this is gonna be a good fight. Perhaps the fight of the night. Kongo is always improving his ground game but that is where I would take it if possible. I'd try to pound him out. Simply my opinion

Sorry, the filter may have obscured my intended meaning. I wasn't slamming Kongo as a fighter, I was just saying he is screwed. Which is just my opinion on this fight.

Lol, you meant Kongo is screwed! Because of the censors I thought you were saying Kongo is crap. My bad!
P.S. Did anyone know that Cheick Kongo's actual name is Merseille Guillaume?

I think Kongo takes it.
His track record is usually to strike with the guy that are strikers for 2-3 minutes in the 1st round then takedown GnP along the cage (Buentello, Hardonk, Herring, Cro Cop, tried to do it against Browne). I wonder how Mitrione has improved though, I've picked Mitrione in every single fight he has had so far... but I dont think he quite takes this one, although I do feel it will be competitive. I think Kongo can clinch/strike and takedown Mitrione en route to a decision.
