Coming off his impressive TUF 6 Finale win over Clay Guida, Roger Huerta now says it will likely be 6-8 months before he fights again. He plans to take time off, spend time with his family, and try to finish classes towards a college degree.

It sucks that we won't see him again for a while but you can't blame him for wanting to do it really.

I can't blame him. I am all for obtaining a college degree, but there is no doubt the timing of his decision is going to hurt him. Coming off the biggest win of his life with a possible number one contenders match in the spring against Kenflo.

If he waits until July or August to come back, he is going to have to win at least two fights to get to this point again.

You can't hate on a guy for wanting to finish his education, but I hope all the other fighters that are giong to continue to fight don't get screwed by this. Most of the top lw in the division will have atleast one maybe even two fights by then moving them further up the ladder. If that's the case I hope they don't get knocked back down by Huerta's return, becuase it is pretty obvious the UFC would rather push for Huerta to the top then other top lw. In that amount of time there is no telling where th lw division will be and with the fighters that have just entered the division going to make a push for the top such as Sanchez, Danzing and Lauzon.

I disagree. I think this is perfect timing for him to take some time off. You gotta realize that he is not gonna get a shot at the belt for a while no matter what because after BJ & Joe Daddy duke it out on Jan 19th, Sherk is gonna get the next shot. So it will probably be later in the year before anybody else will get a shot. And they need to kinda sort out who the top contenders are in that division. Dont really think this will hurt him that much.

You're right man, with great fighters like Tyson Griffin and many many more more, there needs to be a few more fights to see who falls where and sort out this messy but stacked with talent division.

Good for him! Say what you want about Huerta, but he paid his dues. Five fights in one year is not a joke.

Can't wait to him fight again. I'd really love to see a rematch with Guida

Jeez hearing him saying that is really refreshing. It really makes me like and respect the guy more than I already do.

Good for him. Hopefully other fighters will take his lead, and fight more than 2 times a year.

I applaud what he's doing, the only thing i don't like about it is that perhaps he might have to wait even longer for a title shot, but with Sherk first in line it would be even longer than before so it's not really bad timing at all. Finishing school is a great move for him, it's always good to see athletes thinking ahead to what they'll do after their playing/fighting days are over.

This is a dumb move CAREER WISE. I respect him as a person and as a fighter and for wanting to finish school. But this can't be good for his career. He just won the biggest and toughest fight of his career that he almost lost. He's still not a title contender IMO.He's taking 6 to 7 months off. He hasn't beaten any of the big names yet. I'm not bashing him but seriously, what makes you think the people who aren't deep into MMA that aren't on this site or Sherdog and only watch the PPV's and are an average joe fans, what makes you think they won't forget about him?

He's a warrior but I think he should have waited til he beat another big name even though he does deserve and needs break. It just MIGHT be a bad career move for his MMA career thats all I'm saying.

Nice! he deserves it(5 fights/1 year) and is for his own good (college).

Maybe his comeback will be at Mexico ?

Who knows.... but I thought Dana was planning it, if so, now he has plenty of time to do it.

this may be a bad career move from an mma perspective but lets face it lw fighters make very little. what did he make for headling that card, somewhere in the mid 20's. he seems to be a smart guy and it may not be the best timing but getting an education is rarely a bad career move.
