The UFC’s independent drug testing agency does not test for recreational drugs outside of competition. However, marijuana is tested for in-competition. Alcohol is treated similarly – you are not tested for alcohol out of competition, but are prohibited from fighting while drunk.

Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs have a cutoff of 50 ng/ML. World Anti-Doping Agency has a threshold of 150 ng/ML. USADA uses 180 ng/ML. And UFC fighter Kelvin Gastelum tested positive above that level during his last fight, which was in March. As a consequence, Gastelum has been pulled from his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 212.

Weed & mexican food. Deadly combo. I can attest.

I read on twitter they were edibles...made me laugh. Stupid to treat weed as anything different that booze, but whatever...I can't change that shit. Gastelum has some shit to sort out.

I agree with everyone that weed shouldn't be a banned substance but knowing the procedure for drug testing and the limit the USADA has for testing you'd have to be an idiot to test positive for it.

It should be especially easy for an athlete to pass a urine test as they should have less fat which is where the THC can be stored for longer periods.

I've personally tested some commercial tests and I know many people who get regularly tested for work and all the ones I've tested will only detect THC in your urine for about 48 hours and even after 24 hours the level is usually below the 50 NG per ML threshold most workplaces use as a limit.

USADA uses triple that so to test positive over that limit Gastelum must have ingested it that day or late the night before.

It's not like it was a surprise test, it was a test the night of the fight and he knew he'd be tested. You'd think he could have had a little self control.

Don't edibles last longer in your system than smoking it? If so, Kelvin...what were you thinking?

Edibles provide a longer lasting effect because when the THC is metabolized by the liver it becomes 11-hydroxy which passes the blood to brain barrier much easier causing a much more 'potent' high, for lack of a better term. Well, actually not really more potent but a different form of 'high'. As far as the half life of Marijuana goes, it depends very much on each person's fat content, lifestyle choices and genetics. Some can rid a one time use from their system in a few days and some it may takes a few weeks. So, until the say what the NG levels of Kelvin were, it's impossible to say how much he had in his system and thus cannot make an educated guess on when he last consumed the devil's lettuce.
